My topic is plastic pollution and how it can tragically harm the environment. I care about this topic because I used to be very careless about my use of single-use plastic but then after reading some articles and seeing it for myself on the beaches, I realized how big a problem it truly is. I love the ocean and all wildlife but their habitat is being destroyed by human pollution. We only have one earth so people should care about this topic because we are suffocating it in plastic bottles and bags.

My brother and I walked 2 miles down a beach in Florida collecting all the garbage we saw and at the end, we had 4 bags full of garbage. Just the other day we walked down a creek by our house and again collected 4 bags full of trash. I am sure everyone has witnessed plastic pollution but I’m not sure they know the full effects it has on the environment which is why I want to write this essay. Plastic basically never goes away and instead turns into micro pieces of plastic in the ocean which make its way into our food and water supplies. Another goal is to show that things set in place to help the issue like recycling, biodegradable material, and banning plastic bags are not as good as they seems and should be greatly improved upon. I want to write about the complete overuse of plastic that is happening in the world and how governments should take this problem more seriously.
Here is my working thesis statement: It is hard to imagine that something that plays such a major role in our lives and makes everything easier can be extremely destructive; however, the continued use of disposable plastic could ruin the world’s oceans and cause irreversible damage to the environment if the proper measures are not taken by governments and the people.
